Long Ball Lifts Lakers Over Oilmen
In what amounted to a pitcher’s duel early, the Oilmen fell behind 1-0, but scored two runs in the sixth to take the lead. Unfortunately, the lead would not hold, as three hits with two outs, including a three-run home run, sent NWI to defeat, 4-2, against the Michigan City Lakers last night at Oil City Stadium.

Danny Pobereyko (0-2) pitched well, but ended up taking the loss after seven innings of work, his longest outing of the season. Kenny Mahala made a surprise appearance on the mound, as the third baseman finished the contest.

Mahala also started a ninth-inning rally with a leadoff walk, but with the tying runs on base, Leiff Clarkson grounded out to third to end the game. The Lakers’ Dan Snyder tossed a complete game on 150 pitches to get the win. The Oilmen went 5-2 this season against Michigan City.

Around the MCL
The exhibition loss didn’t budge the Oilmen from their second-place spot in the standings, two games back of DuPage County entering play today. DuPage’s magic number to clinch the regular season title (and thus home field throughout the playoffs) is three games, meaning any combination of Hounds wins and Oilmen losses totaling three will prevent NWI from finishing higher than their current standing. NWI plays DuPage in Lisle on Sunday evening.

Adios, Foresters
The Oilmen will face Rockford for the final time tonight in their last regular season home game in 2013. NWI is a perfect 6-0 against the Foresters this season.
