Whiting, Ind.- Meeting number 100 between the Northwest Indiana Oilmen and Southland Vikings did not end with a favorable result for the home team.

The Oilmen were unable to mount much offense, dropping the first game of the homestand to Southland by a score of 6-2.

After giving up three runs in the first two innings, Oilmen starter Mike Schalasy (Palos Heights/UIndy) settled in and worked back to back scoreless frames including a fourth inning where he struck out two of the three batters he faced. Justin Egan (Orland Park/ Black Hawk) Jake Paymaster (New Lenox/ Triton) and Caleb Deel (Gary/ Lake Eerie) each added scoreless innings of relief work.

“We did a good job out of the pen by just throwing strikes,” Oilmen Manager Adam Enright said. “We did a good job limiting what they could do by not walking a lot of batters but it just came down to a couple of miscues that led to runs.”

Offensively the Oilmen struggled to send runners across the plate as they would leave nine men on base in the loss. Chris Baker (South Holland/Trinity Christian) helped out the cause for the Oilmen working two walks and scoring one run. Jason Hodges (Park Forest/ John A. Logan) contributed two of the club's three hits and drove in Baker for a run. David Marshall (Downers Grove/ College of DuPage) also provided an rbi single in the fifth inning

.“When you’re facing good pitching it’s going to come down to getting two out hits which we were unable to do,” Enright said.

The Oilmen will attempt to bounce back when they host the Chicago American Giants on Wednesday at Oil City Stadium at 7:10 P.M. The game will be broadcast across all platforms of the Oilmen Broadcasting Network.
