Seven Oilmen Garner Spots on MCL All-Star Team

Whiting, Ind. – July 5, 2019 – When local fans make their way to Oil City Stadium on Saturday, July 13 for the 2019 Midwest Collegiate League All-Star Game, they’ll have no shortage of players to root for.

The host Northwest Indiana Oilmen will be represented by seven standouts who have earned MCL All-Star Game appearances. The Oilmen All-Stars will play for the East squad alongside Southland and Crestwood honorees. Oilmen manager Kevin Tyrrell will be at the helm for the East team, which will face off with a West group comprised of Bloomington, Joliet and DuPage County.

For the first time in recent years, all seven Oilmen representatives will be first-time MCL All-Stars. Five positions players will appear in the game for Northwest Indiana as catcher Ben Berenda (IU Southeast / Rensselaer, Ind.), second baseman Malik Peters (Northern Illinois / Calumet City, Ill), center fielder Clay Thompson (Oakland / Schererville, Ind.), first baseman Joe Rycerz (Saint Xavier / Schererville, Ind.) and shortstop Justin Conant (Ball State / Shorewood.) will all be on the squad.

The pitching staff will have a pair of representatives as Mike Madura (Purdue Fort Wayne / Munster, Ind.) and Nate DeLoian (Carson Newman / Mokena, Ill.) have earned All-Star status.

Peters leads the team with a .323 batting average while also serving as a major factor on the base paths with a team-high 14 steals. Conant is second on the club with a .315 average and third with a .440 on-base percentage while leading the way with 17 runs scored. Berenda and Rycerz are tied for the team lead in on-base percentage at .453, while Rycerz has collected a team-high 16 RBIs. Thompson owns a .300 average and 13 runs scored to go along with 10 stolen bases.

Madura has logged 19 2/3 innings and boasts a 2-0 record in five games and two starts. He has racked up 21 strikeouts against just two walks on the season. DeLoian has made three starts and sits at 1-1 while striking out 11 over 13 2/3 innings.
