Angelo Cantelo Named MCL Player of the Week08/03/2020 9:25 AM - Whiting, Ind. – Aug. 3, 2020 – A banner week that featured a slice of Northwest Indiana Oilmen history helped catcher Angelo Cantelo (Lewis / Blue Island, Ill.) garner the Midwest Collegiate League Player of the Week honor on Monday. Cantelo became the first player in the nine-year history of the Oilmen to hit for the cycle, doing so while recording six RBIs and four hits in a seven-inning, rain-shortened victory over the MCL Minutemen on Saturday. In addition to achieving the rare feat this week, the Oilmen catcher delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth on Thursday to complete a come-from-behind victory over Southland. Cantelo batted .409 (9-for-22) this week, driving in nine runs while notching five extra-base hits and scoring six runs over five games. He extended his hitting streak to 11 games and has hit safely in 21 of his 22 games this season. Thanks in part to Cantelo’s leadership, the Oilmen are riding a five-game winning streak and locked in a first-place tie in the MCL standings. For the season, he owns a .352 average and .454 on-base percentage with eight doubles, two home runs and 22 RBIs over 22 games. Cantelo becomes the first member of the Oilmen to garner the league’s Player of the Week Award this season and third Northwest Indiana player to receive one of the league’s weekly honors. The Oilmen (18-7) will look to extend their winning streak to six on Monday as they visit the Southland Vikings at 5 p.m. at Dowling Park in Hammond. The game will be broadcast on the Oilmen Broadcasting Network, which is available via Facebook Live. 2020 Player of the Week Award Winners July 13 – Justin Rios, Southland July 20 – Patrick Doran, Minutemen July 27 – Ray Hilbrich, Crestwood Aug. 3 – Angelo Cantelo, NWI 2020 Pitcher of the Week Award Winners July 13 – Jake Karaba, Southland July 20 – Jack Guzek, NWI July 27 – Kyle Iwinski, NWI Aug. 3 – Clayton Bumsted, Southland |
