Bova Leads Oilmen Over Vikings
In yet another exciting finish at Oil City Stadium, Anthony Bova laid down a safety squeeze bunt in the bottom of the ninth to score the winning run, as the Oilmen beat Southland 2-1 on Thursday night for their third walk-off win in 2013.
Bova’s heroics ended a true pitcher’s duel between Aaron Hauge and Jimmy McNamara. Hauge was dominant, striking out 13 batters in his seven innings, and McNamara fanned four in matching him through six. Both hurlers gave up only one earned run.
Both teams also had chances to take the lead in the middle innings, but the pitchers won out until the ninth, when Kenny Mahala led off with a single and was sacrificed to second before Leiff Clarkson singled to set up Bova’s winning bunt.
Aveeno Nasiloski (2-0) got the win, and got out of a huge jam in the ninth for NWI, as the Vikings had a runner at third and no one out.
“Bova-rized”
Not only did Bova drive in the winning run for the Oilmen last night, he drove in both runs, and his defense in center field kept the game tied not once, but twice. In the seventh, he cut down Mark Munizzi at the plate trying to score on a single. Then, in the ninth, his strong throw kept the runner on third when Munizzi flew out to him before Aveeno Nasiloski ended the threat two batters later.
Odds and Ends
The win last night was the second walk-off against Southland this year, and second straight. The other was against Michigan City on Sunday.
