Opening Day at Oil City Stadium!Whiting, IN- After a long offseason The Oilmen will return to 119th Street this Summer. What was supposed to be the second game of the season for the Oilmen, quickly turned into both the first and Opening Day at Oil City Stadium. The Oilmen’s first game was supposed to be a matchup against The Hammond Vikings. As the players received their jerseys, Head Coach Tyler Zunkel made a lineup, and the broadcasters set up their equipment, a massive rain and hail storm cursed Dowling Park. While the players and umpires waited in the dugout, Oilmen broadcasters John Mastej and Charlie Schmidgall, as well as Vikings broadcaster Griffin Winiecki held down their canopy as an artillery barrage of hail fell upon them. Eventually the field manager called the game in order to preserve the field for future uses. This means Opening Day for the Oilmen will also be the first game of the season. It also is the first theme night of the year, The Oilmen combining with the City of Whiting’s Paint the Town Pink. Paint the Town Pink is a group whose goal is to spread awareness for breast cancer and those affected by it. All proceeds generated by the group are given to the Pink Ribbon Society, an organization out of Merrillville whose sole purpose is to provide aid for those suffering from the disease. The Winner of the Paint the Town Pink Raffle will be announced at the game. Tickets were available at The Center Lounge, The Chamber, and Rebecca’s. First Pitch is at 7:00 PM CST as the Oilmen look to finally have their first game of the season and first game against The Hammond Vikings. |
