For Starters
The Northwest Indiana Oilmen have won six consecutive games with their most recent loss coming on June 6 against Michigan City. A win on Friday night over Joliet would establish a new Oilmen franchise record for most consecutive wins. The Oilmen previously won six straight in June 2012. A seven-game winning streak would also tie a Midwest Collegiate League record, a mark set by the Rockford Foresters in 2011, the Will County CrackerJacks in 2012 and the DuPage County Hounds in 2014. The Oilmen have had back-to-back games postponed by rain. On Thursday night, they played three scoreless innings against the Zephyrs before the skies opened up, causing the game to be postponed.
Inside the Oilmen
The Oilmen defeated the Michigan City Lakers 5-3 on Tuesday night to push the winning streak to six. Valparaiso University’s Scott Jerge made his first start of the season and the third of his Oilmen career, tossing three scoreless innings. Jerge has not allowed an earned run in 9 2/3 innings this season. Kankakee Valley graduate Andrew Jackson picked up the first win of his Oilmen career, tossing two shutout frames in relief. Anthony Gomez nailed downed his first save as the Lakers stranded the tying run at second and go-ahead run at first in the ninth. Jason Gasser returned to the Oilmen lineup on Tuesday after missing three games with a minor knee injury. He reached base twice with two walks and a two-run single. Ryan Burvan, one of four players on the team hitting over .300, dropped to the No. 7 spot in the order and went 1-for-4. Nick Vogelmeier moved to the leadoff spot and drew three bases on balls.
Inside the Admirals
The Admirals will be visiting Northwest Indiana under challenging circumstances as they play in their second game of the day in two separate road locations. The team will travel from Joliet to Lisle to play at 11 a.m. on Friday against the DuPage County Hounds before heading to Whiting for the 7 p.m. start. When the Admirals arrive at Oil City Stadium on Friday night, they will be playing in their second nine inning game of the day in addition to dealing with difficult traveling circumstances.
About the Matchup
The Oilmen have taken the first two meetings of the year between the two teams, rolling over the Admirals 13-2 on May 30 before pulling out a 2-1 win at Oil City Stadium on June 13. Cameron Linck tossed five innings of one-run, two-hit ball and received a no decision. Nate Schneider scored the go-ahead run on a Zack Jones sacrifice fly in the eighth inning.
Around the MCL
Both scheduled league games – the Oilmen against the Zephyrs and the Hounds against the Snipes – were postponed by rain on Thursday night. The Oilmen are two games behind the Hounds for first place in the MCL standings. DuPage County plays a split doubleheader on Friday, facing Joliet at 11 a.m. and the Zephyrs at 7 p.m. with both games taking place in Lisle.
