Northwest Indiana Oilmen’s Win Streak Ends

The Northwest Indiana Oilmen’s six game winning streak came to an end Friday night as the Oilmen (14-4) lost 8-7 to the Southland Vikings (6-9) in extra innings.

Southland trailed by one in the ninth, but thanks to a key error from Oilmen Bennett Oliver, they were able to take the lead. With the Northwest Indiana Oilmen down by one in the ninth, John Loeffler doubled, scoring Billy Miller. Loeffler led the Northwest Indiana Oilmen's offensive threat, as he got on base three times. He scored one run and had one RBI singling in the second inning and adding a double in the ninth.

The Vikings went on to attack the Oilmen bullpen for five total runs in the last three innings, most notably the two runs they scored off of Jim Hinkleman in the top of the tenth, including Dan Eliopulos driving in the winning run on a double. The Oilmen made the Vikings sweat out their first season victory against NWI, scoring once in the bottom of the ninth inning to send the game in to extras. But the Oilmen’s usual late game heroics came up short, adding only one run in the bottom of the tenth.

Southland’s Jonathon Rosario got the win, running his season record to 2-0. He allowed one run over two innings. Rosario struck out two, walked one and gave up one hit. Jim Hinklemen ended up with his first loss of the year. Hinkleman lasted just 2 1/3 innings, walked none, struck out one, and allowed four runs.

The Northwest Indiana Oilmen, one of eight teams in the 3-year-old Midwest Collegiate League, a pre-minor league summer wood-bat baseball league with teams ranging throughout the Central Midwest, including Rockford, DeKalb County, Will County and the Chicago Southland.
