Southland Vikings Big Ninth Inning Dooms Northwest Indiana Oilmen

 

The Southland Vikings (17-21) rolled over the Northwest Indiana Oilmen (24-14) 13-4 on Sunday at Oil City Stadium. Heading into the ninth, the Vikings held a 5-4 lead, but blew the game open with eight runs at the top of the inning. The Vikings have been victorious in their last three meetings against the Oilmen.

Southland’s James Dawson had a perfect 3-3 day at the plate to pace the Vikings. Dawson singled in the first and second innings and doubled in the sixth.

Cody Dykema got on base three times for the Northwest Indiana Oilmen, scoring one run with one RBI. Dykema singled in the first and third innings.

Chris Chigas improved to 3-1 on the year by picking up the win for the Southland Vikings. Chigas allowed four runs over eight innings, struck out six, walked four, and surrendered eight hits.

Tait Rauen (1-2) was the game's losing pitcher, lasting five innings, walking eight, striking out none, and allowing five runs.

The Northwest Indiana Oilmen, one of six teams in the 3-year-old Midwest Collegiate League, a pre-minor league summer wood-bat baseball league with teams ranging throughout the Central Midwest, including Rockford, DeKalb County, Will County and the Chicago Southland.
